This is the site of the
17th Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje, the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu
tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Karmapa was the first incarnate lama
(tulku) in Tibet. <br>

Since the 12th century there was a successive line of incarnations of the
Karmapas. This line of reincarnation is central to the transmission of the
Kagyupa Lineage. The present 17th Karmapa was born in Tibet in 1983. He
was found and recognized as the genuine Karmapa reincarnation by Kunzig
Shamar Rinpoche second to the Karmapa in the Karma Kagyu Lineage. The process
of identifying the 17th Karmapa was done in strict accordance with the spiritual
tradition maintained in the Karma Kagyu lineage since the past eight hundred
years.
